High Wire Kung Fu

We watched "Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior" with the kids the other night. It contained some flying Kung Fu stuff, which I realized the girls had not seen much if any of before. They immediately recognized the flying stuff as "fake" and asked how it was done. I told them that they attached wires to the actors, which allowed them to "fly." That was about it until the next day, when 6 y/o P asked how come you couldn't see the wires in the final product. We had seen the "making of" featurette, which showed and talked about the wires. I said, well, they can "take out" the wires using computers after they film it. She said, "Yeah, I know about computers - we have 5 in our house!" It was a funny comment in and of itself, but I think it is also interesting that that was the only explanation required. As in, oh, it's just done with computers, as if it was obvious.

The girls' reaction to the movie was interesting too. H said she wanted to be like the star in this movie, who otherwise plays a shopping-obsessed rich girl on The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. And she said that she liked her a lot better on this movie. Very encouraging. P kept saying that she "wanted to be able to do that," when there was some kind of cool move. Turns out the star of the movie, Brenda Song, actually has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do in real life. Now that is someone worth emulating.
