It was quite a Fourth this year with H. She was so wound up about being with family, and specifically the triplets, that she was up at about 4:30 AM the first morning. We managed to put her off until about 5:15, but then S did what she almost always does, and got up with her. These family gatherings just seem to make her nuts, but it seems to be largely driven by the fact that she likes being with people, and more specifically, family, so much. On the one hand, she drives herself to exhaustion by getting up early and going non-stop, with one result being that, along with L, she gets snappy with us parents. But another result is that she cares so much about the family that she is able to rise above her own issues of competitiveness and need for attention. She actually let Luke and Maddie go before her on her own scooter when we went out to ride on it.
But the thing I really wanted to record was from the first night there. We were having pizza on the back porch of the motel, and I was talking to (the past-middle age) Peter for a while. After we ate, H wanted to go throw the baseball around, to which I was agreeable. After she got some stuff together, she said something like, "Let's go Daddy." I nodded my head or something. She waited a perfect beat, and said, "And you can bring your little pal with you!" S and I almost lost our pizza we were laughing so hard.
